Women In Art Fair
Women in Art Fair is a new art fair dedicated to readdressing the gender imbalance in the art industry. WIAF seeks to create a positive global fair, from which women and those identifying as women, are given an opportunity to show their work and contribute to developing the exchange of ideas around gender, and culture.
This exhibition was at the mall galleries. I feel it's an interesting concept to involved in an exhibition that is purely for women, selected by a blind panel of women. These exhibitions are necessary as they redress and rebalance the sexist art historical narrative.
On the one hand it feels like a positive step forward to be involved in a public professional exhibition space like this. However, it makes me consider this quote by Georgia O'Keeffe “men put me down as the best woman painter… I think I’m one of the best painters”.
This quote always makes me consider another exhibition I've seen called 'Action, Gesture,, Paint' at the White Chapel Gallery. An abstract exhibition where women were 'celebrated'. However, similar to Women in Art Fair, the work felt somewhat crammed in. It felt less like a celebration and more of a clutter of all of the women artist. This is the same observation and feeling I had when looking at 'Action, Gesture, Paint'
