When creating a sound piece I cut up the interview, removing my voice, largely. I then overlapped their individual interview answers or voice note clips. The result when listening, you can hear several answers being given at once by one woman, creating a cacophony of voice. The sounds then quiet and you are left with one singular snippet of voice to hear. By overlapping elements of their answers their personal stories are slightly obscured. This has been done, with the midset of the ethical consideration of these works being available to the public. Giving these women an element of anonymity while still being able to eavesdrop in on their thoughts and feelings. These works explore idea’s around conversation, ‘reinactment, recitation, reimagining’ (p131 A Time Of Ones Own) I see these women, their stories, and the sound works I created as a feminist chorus.
These are the audio tracks I created for the Dirty Laundry exhibition. I used the original sound pieces I had made, thinking about the women's space and placement and how I wanted to pair each sound piece. I wanted two speakers within this space, one on each side of the room, to mimic the two ceramic pieces. Turning these files from video to audio had been long and arduous. But I managed to navigate the complicated Apple system and convert my files into MP4 files.
However, we then come to another issue. I want to use two speakers to place two sound pieces. These two sound pieces are a combination of Xingxin/Beth and then Orla/Ellie/Charley. To have two sound works with two speakers requires two different devices to play from. Easy, you say! Ha, How wrong you are. However, the lovely lady at the student loan centre lent me two speakers, although this is usually against the policy. She could only lend me one MP3 player, although I've managed to upload my Xingxin/Beth sound work onto the MP3 player and play this on a loop. I struggled to work out how to play my second sound work from a separate speaker. After some googling and YouTube, step-by-step explication videos. I learned to loop a YouTube video and then connect my Ipad to the speaker to play another sound piece.
The joy of tech continues; I upload my sound work to YouTube. But ohhhhhhh no. Ha ha ha, you thought it would just smoothly upload, and I would be able to loop my video. Is this a kind world? I think not! Instead, I had to verify my YouTube account to allow larger uploads, as my file was over 15 minutes long. The video of the two speakers on the colourful rug demonstrates two of my sound pieces playing simultaneously to create a chorus of women speaking.
The video is now uploaded, and I can loop it. The works are now ready for the exhibition. I bought myself a congratulations coffee as a well done.
