Conversation With Friends Series
Supporting Works, Watercolour Painting, Oil Painting, Egg Tempera and Sketchbook Studies
Each woman who I included in my study has been given a section or shared section if they are in a conversation; these are made evident by the use of their names. As you scroll down the page, you will see the zoomed-in section of larger-scale oil paintings and larger-scale watercolour paintings. I've included sketchbook studies as well as process shots which highlight the journey of the paintings. Some paintings within this section haven't appeared on Resolved Works as I feel they have been more of a study, and are unresolved or unsuccessful. I've also included a written section next to each person to describe how long our interaction was and to give an indication of what was discussed and their relationship to me.
Jamima, My Boss Asked Me To Dress Like Less Of A Slut- Conversations with freinds, 120x90cm, Oil on Canvas.
Jamima
I’ve known Jamima since university. Jamima studied sculpture, and we became very close during this period and lived together. The paintings of Jamima were based on photographs taken at a meal I had with a group of female friends.

We regularly meet up in a pizza place close to Kings Cross Station. During this encounter, Jamima was over an hour late; this is typical . On another occasion, I waited three hours for her. But once she is there, she lights up a room and emulates joy. During this conversation, Jamima talked a lot about her work and the issues she has been having. She spoke openly about how her male boss had commented on her clothes, saying she dressed like a slut. I stopped taking photos of her during this conversation as I was so shocked by the comments he had made to her in the work space.

This video is a representation of my painting of Jamima. It highlights the detailed elements within the painting and the flow and broken up pigment.
Katie
Katie is loud, confrontational, and expressive. she dominates the space filling up the room with noise. I met Katie through another Friend , and at first, I found it difficult to interact with her. I felt like a wallflower in her presence. Over the years, our friendship and relationship have changed. She understands my quiet nature and gives me space to talk. Katie is now an art teacher, training serval years after me, she actively seeks my opinion about teaching. The paintings of Katie have been based on the same evening with Jamima at the pizza restaurant. However, while Jamima was almost unaware of my gaze, Katie was actively involved in the picture process: posing and changing her body language while I shot the images. Her approach to my gaze was far more active, and I would expect nothing less. Katie is in control of her image.
